Ironic that Paul Ryan complains about ALLLL this Debt and crushing burden, yet leaves out that his plan actually cuts revenue to the government in form of tax breaks to the rich and increases spending to National Defense. (One of the biggest Liabilities on the balance sheet). His plan is like going on a diet but not cutting out Bacon, Cheeseburgers, Ice cream and Nachos. My grandparents died within one year of each other. My mother claimed they couldn’t survive without each other and it was true. Two peas in a pod and lived happily to 90 for my grandfather and 87 for my grandmother. They both passed away in an Assisted Living Retirement Community a few years back and the recent gripe about “Death Panels” had me interested in writing on this process as I just recently went through watching both my grandparents pass away.
My Mother is an Registered Nurse and a Certified Case Manager and so from day one I was not dealing with a normal death and grievance process. I was also a Property Manager of this community where my grandparents lived. My mother and I knew about death, she in particular knew the ins and out of privatized and public Medicare for Seniors. She knew about Power of Attorneys, DNR’s (Do Not Resuscitate) and had dealt with many deaths in her career. My mother is the closest thing to a saint when it comes to helping and although I am biased many others would agree. She did whatever it took to keep my grandparents happy and healthy and after her work days would go to the Retirement Community and check on my Grandparents. She would make sure they had their Mocha Mix and plenty of Raisin Bran. As a professional my mother recognized the signs as my grandparents slowly deteriorated and ordered Hospice first for my grandmother and then for my grandfather when both quality of life was decreasing.
My grandmothers uneven heartbeat was slowed down through morphine and eventually she fell asleep. My grandfather who had chronic emphysema who started smoking at 12 was now gasping for life and morphine and sedatives were given to help him down. Is this a “Death Panel”? I am not sure but I think its the most humane thing we can do when someone is suffering through a natural process.
My mother was the one who set up and facilitated these processes but for the rest of the population that isn’t a Certified Case Manager What do you do? My question is where are the “Doctors” in this process? Medicare has long been known for inflated costs and doctors offering more service/procedures than needed. Last Year Medicare Billed out $55 Billion dollars just for patients in the last few months of life. To put this in perspective this is more than the total Department of Education budget and most of these bills were paid with little or no oversight. Billions each year are spent on patients that when formally reviewed should have died but were artificially kept alive for extra weeks while doctors and rehab facilities collected millions. Not only is it very expensive but I argue inhumane! Why are we delaying Death? Are we afraid to talk about it? Or are we afraid of seeming unkind, or unloving? It is our own discomfort that hinders the process of life. Health Care reform aimed to reform this costly and inhumane practice only to be ignorantly hailed as “Death Panels”. Political Banter has been thrown around about this to scare people into believing for-profit insurance and Doctors sucking Government money is right and just by the people instead of realistically looking at Life and Death. Death is a part of life and if we impede, it will be costly. So for the Politicians who haven’t studied a lick about Health-care, when it’s your turn to “Go” I hope they drag it out as you have in the political process.
